a new article by José Luis Stevens, PhD

The United States and other democratic nations of the world are convulsing as strong powers seek to dismantle democracies in favor of totalitarian and authoritarian rule.

First, let’s understand what these terms mean. There are concerted efforts to turn nations toward authoritarian rule and perhaps worse, totalitarian rule. The difference is that in authoritarian rule a small cabal seizes control, eliminates choice, and rules by decree leaving the rebellious populace to stew in their helplessness, while in a totalitarian state the populace is exhorted to support the totalitarian rulers and become part of the passion play complete with cheering, parades, and a seeming display of total approval. This is what Kim Jong Un of North Korea has in place and what Putin has been working toward in Russia. This what the former president running for another term would love to install.

How are these types of rule different from one another in essence? Under authoritarian rule there is a dictator or tyrant that simply decrees how it will be and that is that. Quite commonly authoritarian rule begins with a coup and then gradually morphs into totalitarian rule over time as the dictator realizes they need buy in from the people. Then they can do whatever they want without rebellion. The problem with this kind of rule is that it infuriates the masses and there are endless attempts to overthrow the dictator. A totalitarian state is more diabolical because in this situation there is an attempt to harness the population to buy into the dictatorship leading the people to believe it is for their own good. Here is where the cheering crowds and parades come into play. There are rousing speeches telling people what they want to hear, that they are the best and that their leaders honor them which of course is sheer nonsense.

While there have always been authoritarian and totalitarian states because of the young soul’s paradigm in control of the world for the last several thousand years, there is a resurgence of interest in it now. There are several reasons for this state of affairs coming from different directions. One is that the age of Aquarius that has recently begun in astrological lore, refers to a period of time that brings an increase in balance and harmony in the world, but also independence and authority. While Aquarius lovers have been anticipating this era for quite some time, they have overlooked this dominant authority aspect to it and now it is rearing its head.

Secondly, the era we are entering is more mature souled in nature with a shift toward an interest in relationships, cooperation, and more love. This shift is highly desired by the mature and older souls in the world population but it also represents an end to childhood with the selfishness, greed, and narcissism that accompanies it. So, what we are seeing is a young soul backlash as they are realizing they are losing their grip on the world and don’t want to let it go. They are currently redoubling their efforts to preserve their value system that is focused on elitism, dominance, greed, and corruption to get what they seek, which is everything. This push to hang on is strong but it is no match for the powers of evolution that inexorably push ahead to a new paradigm. This causes intense fear in younger souls who are not yet ready to grow up and this fear propels desperation and outrageous actions that in the long run are futile but in the short run are highly destructive.

What compounds this challenge is that mature souls are used to suffering and expect it. Like most adolescents, they are resigned to being misunderstood and feeling like strangers in a strange land. It is not surprising that cynicism, skepticism, as well as wild eyed idealism and martyrdom are rampant in this stage. This accounts for many of the movements that so enrage the younger souls like defunding the police, student protests, special pronouns for LGBTQ people, cancel culture, Me Too, being ecological, driving electric cars, wearing masks, and trying to make everything feel safe for everyone. Younger souls would like to see a single authority who takes charge and who will eliminate all these namby-pamby ideas and return us to manly fossil fuels, guns, sexed up men, subjugated women, a single authority, and the rest of this archaic philosophy.

To understand the complete picture let us now look at the personality of a past president trying to regain control to establish authoritarian and totalitarian rule. This individual is a fifth level young king. Young refers to an emotional age that comes between six and twelve years old. Thus narcissism, lying, flexing newfound ego skills through intense competitiveness, putting down others, bullying, and displaying no insight into how others feel or personal behavior. It is basically a philosophy of “I am right. You are wrong. I am better, you are lowly. He or she who dies with the most toys, wins.” He is not too interested in the positions he takes, just so long as they get him votes, and this enamors younger souls to him (Christian right). He breaks all the rules and does what he pleases, always staying a step ahead of the law and this impresses younger souls no end because it is exactly what they wish they could do.

There are five main stages of development in the physical human form. Each stage has seven levels. The young stage is the third stage after infant and toddler stages. In other words, latency age. The fifth level is a sage level and highly eccentric thus this individual’s strangeness, tendency for drama and entertainment, insatiable desire to be the center of attention, strange hairstyle, etc. He has a goal of dominance in this life, a mode of aggression (he is okay with violence) with a slide to perseverance (insisting he won the last election). There is also marked arrogance and greed that slides to self-destructiveness. He is moving centered with a marked need for expansion, (wanting to take over), a need for security requiring absolute loyalty from everyone, or he feels unsafe. A person with this personality type is the perfect prototype for authoritarian rule. Infant and toddler souls feel safer with him at the helm. They behave like sheep to his lion. Other young souls who are also playing the power game are no match for him so they ride his coat tails to other positions of power under his thumb. He gives them little choice. “Surrender or I will destroy you.” Mature souls experience anguish in relation to him. They try to keep him from being too destructive. Old souls don’t care and are not very interested in his personality cult. They understand that he is just a figure head for the times. As Gandhi said “Remember that all through history, there have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they seem invincible. But in the end, they always fall. Always.”

Old souls, who make up only 15% of the population, know that such a figure represents the ego within and that is where the real confrontation is. Does one allow such a tyrant to live within and take over or let Essence sweep it away and govern with wisdom and knowledge in its stead? When this happens, all tyrants will fall because they are just projections of the internal ego. That is the best overall strategy at this time. Of course, you can and should vote and then of course live by example, without fear of such terrified child leaders.
